My Thoughts on College Football, Week 5

10- The Hogs beat New Mexico State, and while I would say that was a no-brainer, you just never know nowadays. It was good to see Austin Allen get into a little rhythm with some other players like Nance.

9-Speaking of no-brainers…Troy beat LSU. Yep. That happened. The trolling on Twitter was almost instantaneous and brutal. Coach O has got a lot of work to do in Baton Rouge. I don’t think he’s on the proverbial “hot seat.” They would have to pay him a fortune, and they are still paying Les Miles. But I bet somewhere, right now, Les Miles is smiling.

8-Saquon Barkley is my Heisman winner. Barkley returned the opening kickoff, 98-yards, for the touchdown. Just saying. And as if that wasn’t enough, he THREW a touchdown. Yep, I’m not sure what this guy cannot do. Penn State beat Indiana handily, thanks in part to him.

7-Florida beat Vandy, it cost them their starting QB Luke Del Rio however, who is out now with a collarbone injury/surgery. I’m done picking Vandy. I keep thinking there’s an upset on the horizon and nothing.

6-Alabama manhandled Ole Miss. I knew Bama would win, but 66-3? The student body of Ole Miss voted last week on changing their mascot. They voted between the historic black bear and the “Landshark,” a term coined by the 2008 Rebel defense. With the revelations of Coach Freeze’s indiscretions and this whooping, they might should vote on dropping the football program. OK, OK, that’s extreme…but wow.

5-Mason Rudolph said last night after their win over Texas Tech that a lot of the plays called were him “ad-libbing.” Makes you wonder about the play calling. Had he not made a few decisions of his own, like running for 16 yards for the go-ahead touchdown, they may have lost this one. Justice Hill rushed for 164 yards, and Rudolph threw for 376 yards.

4-Kelly Bryant looked to finally be settling into his role as the QB for the Clemson Tigers. In the post-game interview, he said, “I just have a never quit attitude.” And it shows. He broke tackles left and right, zig-zagging all over the field, very reminiscent of Deshaun Watson. Again, that front defensive line for the Tigers was stellar.

3-Wisconsin managed to remain undefeated yesterday. Northwestern was, however, the first team to score on them in the second half all season. The Badgers’ true freshman running back looked especially impressive in the first half. The defense came up big for Wisconsin though and managed to win this one. I don’t see them as undefeated at the end of the season, however.

2-How about those Dawgs? Georgia looks good this year. The true freshman quarterback Fromm was shaky and had some mistakes. But the defense and running game were spot on for Georgia. Tennessee is awful this season. Butch Jones needs to be in the unemployment line ASAP.

1-WAR DAMN EAGLE! Auburn’s offense looks to be clicking finally, and at just the right time. And Kevin Steele’s defense continues to impress. Kerryon Johnson rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns, his longest run of the day for 59 yards showed his speed. Jarrett Stidham finally looks to be settling in, throwing for 264 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Malik Willis looks really good too, thankfully. He rushed 67 yards for an impressive touchdown himself.

Until next week…
